Puri Jagannatha Temple: The Mystery of the Deity

Actually, Jagannatha is referred as the Lord of the cosmos directing the world from the sacred temple (Fig.1) of Puri. This temple is a traditional place for the Buddhist and Jains who once alienated from Hinduism due to rebellion. Besides it, the special Bhakti doctrines disseminated by saints like Nanak or Kabir are another reason for this alienation. Within the circle of Hinduism, all the sects and sub-sects are found theologically, highlighting the abode of their own gods in the sacred sanctum sanctorum of the Puri temple. Shri Jagannatha along with his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, sister Devi Subhadra, and Shri Sudarshan are worshipped as Chaturdha Murty in the Puri temple. This place has a historicity complex iconography. During the ‘Nabakalebara’ ritual of this temple Lord Jagannatha trio undergoes total changes of the body like a common.
